Recent hot weather has led to high E. Coli counts and a boil water advisory for residents of a Chilliwack neighbourhood.
Those living in the Mount Shannon area on Little Mountain have been told by city hall to boil tap water prior to use for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing foods dishes or making infant formula.
Director of engineering David Blain said the results of weekly water test taken Wednesday within the Mount Shannon zone 2 reservoir didn't meet drinking water standards due to E. coli counts.
City staff received the results Thursday and by the afternoon were delivering notices to residents.
To remedy the situation, the city will chlorinate and flush out the water system, a process that will take approximately four days to complete.
Blain said the need for chlorination on Little Mountain is not unusual but a boil water advisory is uncommon.
Affected residents should boil water for two minutes at a rolling boil and then allow the water to cool before using.
Residents who have not received a written notice may continue to consume water directly from the tap.
