Hundreds of people raised close to $17,000 for the Chilliwack Hospital and Health Care Foundation (CHHCF) at a special breakfast event on Dec. 5.

Organizers say 300 people attended the fundraiser, proceeds from which will go towards a new health program in Chilliwack schools.

"We were so pleased that so many people and businesses offered to help which ensured that it was spectacular," said Donna Dixon, CHHCF's director of community relations.

The CHHCF Basic Training Campaign, launched in May, provides education and encouragement for individuals to "eat, sleep, and get going," with the aim of ensuring that Chilliwack residents get a good night's sleep, and be physically and socially active.

"This event was our first fundraiser and an opportunity to share with the community that we are a local foundation dedicated to working with other health care stakeholders to find solutions to our very unique health challenges," Dixson said. "It is exciting to see how many people came out to show their support and contribute their money to helping us do this important work and we are especially grateful to the Chilliwack Coast Hotel for their generous contribution to making it all happen."

The biggest single donation came from Canada Lands Company, which provided $5,000 for the program. The Chilliwack & District Real Estate Board also contributed $4,700.
