If more square dancing was on your list of New Year's resolutions, you're in luck.
The Chilliwack Rhythm Reel-ers Square and Round Dance Club hosts a series of beginner classes starting Jan. 14.
The first session kicks off with a spaghetti dinner at 6 p.m., followed by one-and-a-half hours of instruction starting at 7 p.m.
The first three Monday-night dances are always free to newcomers; after that, the cost is $6 per person per night ($3 for dancers 18 and younger).
The Rhythm Reelers club, which is getting ready to celebrate its 58th year in Chill-wack, hosts weekly square and round dances every Monday from 7 p.m. to 9: 30 p.m. (except holidays) throughout the year at Atchelitz Hall on Lickman Road.
Visitors are welcome any Monday to come out and watch square and round dancing in action and join in the fellowship and activity.
Besides being a lot of fun, the friendly folk dance is a great way to get exercise, said Rhythm Reeler Rose-Ann Lewis in a press release.
She estimates a two-hour evening of square dancing is equal to about a six-kilometre hike, and she cites studies by the American National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute that found dancing lowers the risk of heart disease risk, decreases blood pressure and helps with weight management.
