CHILLIWACK -- A 10-year-old boy survived what could have been a deadly accident Monday because he was wearing a helmet, according to Chilliwack RCMP.

The boy drove his scooter down a condominium complex driveway at about 6 p.m., entered the roadway and crashed into a moving vehicle.

"Emotions are running extremely high for us during calls involving kids," said Const. Tracy Wolbeck. "There is no doubt that his choice to wear his helmet that day saved his life. He received an injury to his head that could have easily been fatal if not for his helmet."

RCMP are now reminding parents to ensure their children are aware of the dangers and risks associated with riding their bikes, skateboards and scooters near traffic.

"Please ensure that children not only have a helmet to wear, but that the helmet fits properly on their head," said Wolbeck. " A helmet that does not fit will not absorb the impact of a hit or a fall and could cause serious injuries."
