The Chilliwack RCMP are warning the public about a money scam.

An elderly couple was contacted and advised that they had won more than a million dollars in a lottery. In order to receive their funds, they were requested to send financial instalments to a person identifying himself as a lawyer.

"The couple sent a total of $6,500 to an overseas account," said RCMP spokesperson Const. Tracy Wolbeck. "These are not uncommon, we have seen them before. We want the public to be aware that this lottery scam has occurred in the past and to always question when being requested to send money."

Once money has been sent it is very difficult, through police investigation, to reacquire those funds.

Anyone with information regarding this fraud is asked to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at (604)792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1(800 )222-8477 (TIPS).
