A Chilliwack teen is asking for the public's help to make her B.C.'s Next Singing Sensation.
Dani Cherniwchan, 16, is one of 11 B.C. performers competing in the People's Choice Contest segment of Variety's Got Talent, an annual talent show.
Cherniwchan's video was chosen from among hundreds of submissions. The performer with the most votes in the People's Choice segment-which wraps up next week-will move on to compete against nine other singers at the River Rock Theatre.
The winner will be chosen by a distinguished group of judges that includes Bruce Allan, the Vancouver music magnate who has managed the careers of Michael Buble, Bryan Adams and others.
In her video, Cherniwchan-a Grade 11 student at Sardis secondary school- performs an acoustic cover of Sara Bareilles's Bluebird.
Cherniwchan, whose favourite band is Train, said she likes to sing and play acoustic ballads because they best suit her voice.
Cherniwchan entered the contest on the recommendation of her singing coach.
"I thought I'd give it a try," she said. "I thought I might as well take the chance and try out."
She said it was thrilling to learn that she had advanced to the People's Choice Contest.
"It was really exciting: very, very, very exciting," she said. "I felt that it's kind of proof that you're good, to hear it back from people who work in the music industry," she said.
In her attempt to progress to the final, Cherniwchan is campaigning at school, plastering posters around town and trying to get classmates to vote for her.
