The Chilliwack Festival Chorus presents Ancient Verses-Sacred Glow: A Celebration of the Coming of the Light this weekend.

The upcoming concerts Dec. 8 and 9 will evoke the chill mists of winter in haunting Celtic melodies, and the warmth of community expressed in songs of wassail and good cheer.

The concert program runs the complete spectrum to get everyone in the Christmas mood, and includes ancient plainchant, medieval choral settings, First Nations melodies and hearty drinking songs.

Directed by Chilliwack Academy of Music's Paula Quick, and accompanied by Graham Yates, the chorus is bolstered by a host of special guest performers as well. Dan McDermid on Celtic whistle and Jamie Stuart on mandolin will lend an authentic Celtic sound to many selections, along with Margaret Smiley providing the medieval touch on oboe. In keeping with popular recent tradition, the Tayosei children's choir, directed by Lisa Scyner and accompanied by Kelsey Scyner, will perform a youthful and inspiring set of selections.

At this time of year, when the nights are long and dark, most cultures celebrate their shared humanity and hope for a joyful year ahead. Ancient Verses-Sacred Glow speaks to the universal elements of joy, beauty, community and good cheer. It will be the perfect outing to welcome the hope that everyone yearns for during the holiday season.

? The concerts take place on Dec. 8 at 7: 30 p.m. and Dec. 9 at 2: 30 p.m. at Carman United Church at Vedder and Webb. Admission is $20 general, $17 for seniors and $8 for students 18 and under. Tickets can be purchased through the Cultural Centre box office: 604-391-SHOW or www.chilliwackculturalcentre.ca or at the door.
