A 25-year-old man died Friday night when he was struck by a train at the Young Road crossing.

Coroner Barb McLintock said Robert Jonathan Beaudry was visiting Chilliwack from out of town. She said the man tried to cross the tracks on foot before an oncoming train arrived.

McLintock said Beaudry was travelling with friends in a taxi when it stopped at the railway crossing at 11:30 a.m.

Beaudry left the taxi and tried, but failed, to beat the train.

"His thought that he could make it across and skip waiting for the time to come was an error in judgment," McLintock told the Times.

The Coroners Service continues to investigate.

The death is the second fatality this year at the Young Road crossing.

In February a 49-year-old man was struck by a train near the crossing.

And in July, a quick-thinking bicyclist helped save the life of a 92-year-old Chilliwack man whose scooter got caught in the train tracks.
