The Promontory Heights subdivision was blocked off Wednesday morning and local residents evacuated from their homes after an excavator hit a gas line in the area.

The machine was at work at a residential construction site near the corner of Upland Drive and Promontory Road when it ruptured the gas line at about 8:30 a.m.

Police evacuated several nearby residences and closed off access to the subdivision as a safety precaution.

Fortis BC attended the scene and closed the gas line before residents were allowed back into their homes.

"Quick response by both the police and Fortis BC ensured a safe outcome to this incident," RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen said.
