A semi truckload of hay caught fire on Highway 1 in Chilliwack on Thursday leading to the temporary closure of the Yale/Vedder eastbound exit.

Smoke billowed from the stacked hay bales but Chilliwack firefighters quickly knocked it down before 11 a.m.

A backhoe was then brought into load the hay into a dumptruck to clean up the scene, which was visible from the back parking lot at Cottonwood Mall.
