Fishing up the right creek
It’s expected to be a bountiful year for fishers of all varieties along the Fraser River in 2014. With salmon numbers predicted to be high, the quantity of anglers will also increase along the river’s banks, eager to take home their share.
The Fraser River Fisheries Peacemakers is holding an event on Island 22 Saturday to remind people to celebrate salmon fishing “with a focus on safety, cooperation and respect”.
Harmony on the Fraser will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. near the boat launch and will include materials on display, dry casting demonstrations and water safety tips.
Groups from First Nations fishers, sports fishermen and other stakeholders and interest groups will be present to talk to interested parties.
The creation of the Peacemakers rose out of a conflict on the river in 2009 between recreational anglers and First Nations fishers—two groups long at odds with one another.
Five years later, they have made great strides in promoting understanding within the fishing community as a whole, according to its co-founders.
