Chilliwack firefighters from three halls battled a serious fire in frigid temperatures Thursday morning at a Promontory townhouse complex.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene of the fire just before 10 a.m. and had it beaten down before noon.

Assistant fire chief Mike Bourdon reported the fire was initially "stubborn to fight" but they were able to knock it down and limit damage to the one unit with no fire damage to neighbouring properties.

The fire was in the end unit of a townhouse complex on Russell Road just off Teskey way.

The occupants were not home at the time of the fire, and the residents are in the care of Emergency Social Services.

Before noon a neighbour had already created a GoFundMe account to raise funds for the family with three elementary-school aged children.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries, and the cause of the fire appears to be accidental and is under investigation.
