Abbotsford police have named the Chilliwack man who died in a head-on collision Thursday afternoon.

Alexander Hatt, 68, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics after the GMC Jimmy he was driving slammed into a large farm truck at Wells Line Road and Inter-Provincial Highway about 3:30 p.m.

Hatt’s Jimmy was pinned under the truck from the force of the impact, Const. Ian MacDonald said, adding that the two occupants in the truck were not hurt

in the accident.

Collision reconstruction experts continue to investigate the crash, however, it is “too early” to tell the cause of the accident. “At this point, we can’t go with anything other than the driver of the GMC Jimmy and the farm truck collided head on and the driver of the Jimmy died at the scene,” said MacDonald.

“It will be some time until we have all the answers.” MacDonald said dealing with a victim’s family following an incident involving death is always a sobering experience for law enforcement.

“In situations and tragedies like this one, it’s the real moment of impact for police. Not just at the scene. “Seeing how families are affected really drives home the gravity of the situation.”
