FVRD going to the dogs

City hands over animal control leash

'Tis the season for dog licence renewals but pet owners are being notified to not go to Chilliwack City Hall.

The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) has taken over animal control responsibility for the city along with issuance of dog licences.

"We are excited to be able to provide this service for the City of Chilliwack," said George Murray, FVRD's chief administrative officer. "It's part of our long-term strategy to be an innovative, collaborative partner. We hope to build on Chilliwack's successful program and, through partnerships with other communities, achieve cost efficiencies that benefit us all."

This means that effective immediately, all licences and licence renewals are issued by the FVRD. Additionally, all animal complaints and enquiries are handled directly by staff at the animal control facility (604-7954638).

Licence renewal notices will be mailed out by the end of December. Licences can be renewed online or at the FVRD's Chilliwack office before Feb. 8, 2013. The office will be open late until 8 p.m. on Jan. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, and Feb. 7 to accept payments.

"We want this change to be as seamless and easy as possible for the public," Murray said.
