Mounties are warning the public of a fishy scam perpetrated in Chilliwack last weekend.

Police say they received two calls of a man going door-to-door on the north side of Chilliwack asking residents if they would like to buy some fish.

In two instances, when residents turned their backs on the man, the supposed fishmonger grabbed a wallet in plain view and fled on a bicycle carrying a black duffel bag.

"We want homeowners to be aware that this has happened and to be cautious when opening your doors to strangers," RCMP spokesperson Const. Tracy Wolbeck said. "It is a real violation when crimes like this happen right under your nose and we don't want anyone else to be victimized this way."

Both victims gave similar descriptions of the man to police.

The man was describes as native, in his 20s, with dark hair and a goatee.
