A Grade 6 Robertson elementary school student who organized a successful toy and clothing Christmas drive was met with thanks and appreciation when she dropped off the proceeds from her efforts Thursday afternoon at Ruth & Naomi's Mission.
Mykenzie Nelson, 11, said she felt sorry for those who wouldn't otherwise be opening any presents on Christmas Day.
"It's around Christmas time and everyone should have at least one present," Mykenzie told the Times.
So Mykenzie decided to organize a drive to gather used clothing and toys from her classmates. Her idea was adopted by the entire school, and on Thursday she helped unload a car stuffed with donated clothing and toys at Ruth and Naomi's.
Robertson held a competition between various "team groups," each comprising several classrooms, with the team that donated the most getting a joint prize.
"I feel proud because of how much we brought in," said Mykenzie. "It all looks pretty brand new too."
Mykenzie said she personally donated several bags of clothing, along with two boxes full of toys and stuffed animals.
