A bomb threat at Chilliwack secondary school Thursday afternoon was likely a diversion for a jewelry store robbery on the other side of Highway 1 minutes later, according to Chilliwack RCMP.
Police responded to a bomb threat at CSS at about 2:15 p.m., according to Staff Sgt. Tom Caverly.
He said Mounties evacuated staff and students using the fire alarm and conducted a sweep of the school but found nothing,
About 15 minutes after the call, however, two people robbed JR Jewellers on Luckakuck Way after one of the culprits produced a gun.
The jewelry store was closed Thursday afternoon and a sign on the door said it had been robbed and pepper spray had been used and needed to be cleaned up.
RCMP are now looking for the robbers and their getaway car, a grey 1990 Plymouth Acclaim.
CSS, meanwhile, will be open for school as usual tomorrow morning, according to a notice on the School District No. 33 website.
"The evacuation was a precautionary measure only, as the incident was not one that posed a significant risk to students or staff," states the notice. "However, as part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring a safe learning environment, we take all issues that may affect school safety seriously."
