Citing a lack of evident remorse for Ashleigh Tschritter's role in the violent robbery and beating of a Chilliwack woman, Justice Brian Joyce sentenced the pregnant Chilliwack woman to 14 months in jail Friday.

After a trial, Tschritter was convicted last month of the robbery of Jessica MacBeth outside of the Five Corners Bank of Montreal in March of 2010.

The court heard that Tschritter and Vanessa Sker-ratt attacked MacBeth outside the bank, stole her purse and, when the 26-year-old UFV student fought back, brutally beat her. Among various violent acts, Tschritter aimed a "soccer-style" kick to the back of MacBeth's head.

The attack left MacBeth in hospital with a fractured skull and numerous other injuries. At one point it was unclear whether she would survive the night.

Skerratt was sentenced to 10 months in jail in May after pleading guilty to her role in the attack.

Sentencing rules dictate that similar sentences should be handed down for similar offences and similar offenders.

In handing down his decision, Joyce noted that Tschritter's crime was indistinguishable from that of Skerratt's. He also said both had difficult childhoods and problems with addiction, and noted that both were pregnant at the time of their sentencing.

The difference was the fact that Skerratt pleaded guilty to her crimes and showed remorse, Joyce said.

"Those two mitigating circumstances resulted in a lesser sentence," Joyce said.
