I have met and worked with many, many volunteers. They are the moms and dads of organized sports, clubs, etc.

The grandmas and grandpas are at the legions, meals on wheels, etc. These people understand the importance of the job, the people relying on them to show up and complete the task they have volunteered to do.

No pay involved, just the satisfaction at the end of the day of a job well done.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about a few elected people, receiving pay for a job.

The enthusiasm, the caring about community, the environment and finances high on the list during elections.

Here we are a short two months after elections without full attendance of our elected officials at a board meeting.

Yes, I speak of the Cultus Lake Park Board.

I do not know these people; maybe the flu has kept them from attending. I do understand the responsibilities of members; to consider the well-being and interests of community and to participate in board meetings. The discussion before seeking election should have included family and employer. Do I have the time required? May I leave work early?

When do we take the family vacation?

The Cultus Lake Park Board has a big job ahead for the next three years and it requires the attendance of all elected board members, so pull up your socks and get on with it.
