Krause new voice of the Chiefs
There’s a new voice in town for the Chilliwack Chiefs this season, as the team picks up a fresh play-by-play announcer.
Kraig Krause, 25, returns home to call the local games online, on Shaw TV, and with reports on 89.5 FM The Drive.
“Kraig is the epitome of a team player and he has an incredible work ethic and a contagious positive attitude,” said Chiefs marketing director Barry Douglas.
Krause had just returned from studying communications in Toronto and has been working in Vancouver for the Canadians, a Toronto Blue Jays single A affiliate. Douglas had worked with Krause with the Chilliwack Bruins before, and thought of the young radio host for the Chiefs position this season.
“I said, ‘Definitely,’” said Krause. “Being able to come back here and be involved with the Chief’s culture . . . It was natural.”
It’s been all studies and little action for the self-admitted newbie to play by play, but he said he isn’t worried.
“I’m trying to soak in as much wisdom and knowledge from everyone around me that’ve been in the business and have done play by play,” he said.
“And knowing [the individuals] as people rather than just as players—I think that’ll bring something really special to the city and to the broadcast booth.”
Continuing his studies at University of the Fraser Valley, he’ll be taking a lighter load in order to dedicate the time he needs to gain that intimacy with the club.
But he said the extra effort and time needed to take on the Chief duties and go to school won’t even seem like work.
“I love being here so really it’s not a job,” he said. “And Barry my boss, the guy in charge, he’s a great leader.”
“We’ve had a great relationship over the years and I couldn’t ask for a more positive influence.”
Hear Kraig Krause’s debut at the Chief’s first exhibition game, Sept. 5 when they take on the Surrey Eagles at the Prospera Centre. Visit www.chilliwackchiefs.net for more information.
