Huskers put out call for new head coach

The Valley Huskers organization announced it is seeking a head coach to join returning coaches in the upcoming season.

The club listed these requirements for the lead position: experience in coaching at the junior and/or university level, knowledge to formulate practice plans and administer a strong disciplined system, ability to create a two-year action plan with a sense of direction and purpose, strength and leadership for both staff and players, time and dedication towards player and coach recruitment from the Lower Mainland and Canada, passion and dedication to work towards building a competitive program, community mindedness and the willingness to keep building relationships, ability and willingness to work with the Huskers board of directors in developing the program.

Get on the MEND

Spots are open for the next session of MEND, a free and fun program that empowers families with children aged seven to 13—who are above a healthy weight—to become healthier by participating in a twice-weekly sessions focused on healthy meal planning, goal setting and physical activity. Parents or caregivers join their children in each session to learn how to choose healthier foods. Families participate in practical demonstrations and games offering tips about healthy eating, label reading and portion size. In addition, physical activity sessions focus on having fun. MEND is offered at the Chilliwack Neighbourhood Learning Centre. The next session runs from Jan. 19 to March 11 every Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For more information please contact or call 604-701-4978 ext. 6043.


Winter pool sessions

The Chilliwack Centre of Excellence (CCE) offers pool sessions this winter for paddlers who want to keep in shape or practise their skills over the holidays. Beginner pool lessons are available this year for those who want to learn in water that is warmer than the winter rivers. CCE instructor Rhys Taylor is teaching basic to intermediate skills such as: boat control, wet exits, and introductory rolling. Gear will be provided if needed, but feel free to bring your own. All pool sessions will be held at the Chilliwack YMCA. Visit for more details.


Money on the line

The Pacific All-Star Cheerleading Championships (PAC) come to Chilliwack Heritage Park in the new year, with a $1,500 program champion cash prize at stake. Doors open at 8 a.m. on Jan. 9 for the PAC event with admission $15 for adults, $13 for students/military/seniors and free for kids under three (admission is cash only).
