A Michigan tournament for National Hockey League prospects next week will have a distinctively Chilliwackian flavour.
Roman Horak, a New York Rangers draft pick, will join up with undrafted Bruins captain Brandon Manning, who secured an invite from the Rangers to the annual Traverse City Prospects Tournament, which beings on Saturday in Traverse City, Mich.
But the pair won't be the only Bruins in Michigan this weekend.
After taking on prospects from the Columbus Blue Jackets organization on Saturday, Horak and Manning will face off against a couple of old friends on Sunday. On that day, the Rangers will face Carolina Hurricanes prospects, including Hurricane draft pick (and Bruins defenceman) Tyler Stahl and tournament invitee Chris Collins.
Dylen McKinlay, meanwhile, will suit up for the Minnesota Wild prospects. The Wild square off with the Hurricanes Saturday, the Blue Jackets Sunday and the Rangers on Tuesday.
Two other Bruins are also headed to NHL camps, although neither of their teams are sending a squad to the Traverse City tournament. Ryan Howe will participate in the Calgary Flames' training camp, while Kevin Sundher will do the same with the Buffalo Sabres.
TOP THREE BANTAM PICKS
The Chilliwack Bruins have now locked up their top three picks from this spring's bantam draft.
The Bruins signed Clay Spencer, who was chosen 29th overall in the draft, and Luke Harrison, who was chosen 51st, to standard WHL education contracts.
Spencer scored 30 goals and added 36 assists in 33 games last season with Lethbridge of the Alberta Bantam Hockey League last year. Harrison spent last year with the Westside Bantam Tier 2 team.
"We're really pleased to have these two players join our organization," said Bruins general manager and head coach Marc Habscheid. "They performed well throughout camp and we look forward to seeing them improve throughout the coming season."
The 15-year-olds are eligible to play no more than five games each for the Bruins over the coming season.
First-round draft pick Kennan Kanzig was signed in June.
GRANT WILL MAKE HIS BONES WITH DINOS
Chilliwack Bruins grad Colton Grant has pledged his services to the University of Calgary Dinos for the coming year.
Grant was acquired by the Bruins midway through last year. While he didn't light the lamp often, he was an invaluable source of energy in the playoffs.
