After dropping consecutive games for the first time all year, the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Cascades women's basketball team got back on the winning track last weekend with a pair of big victories.

The Cascades hammered the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) Timberwolves in back-to-back games to restate their case as one of the best women's teams in the country.

The Cascades laid a 67-42 beating on the Timberwolves Friday and then followed that victory up Saturday with a 8247 demolition of UNBC.

UNBC played tight defence Friday and limited the Cascades to their lowest point total in a half this season.

But it wasn't enough to overcome the Cascades, who are ranked fourth in the nation.

Chilliwack's Sarah Wierks led all scorers with 15 points and nine rebounds Friday. Her sister Nicole added 10 points and eight assists.

"Tonight was about getting some of our momentum back again," UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer said. "I thought defensively we were tough until the last couple of minutes, but offensively it took us until the second half to find any rhythm."

On Saturday night, the Cascades found their game and their shots against the younger Timberwolves.

Courtney Bartel led all scorers with 16 points, while Kayli Sartori accounted for 11 points. Ten different Cascades recorded points as Tuchscherer used his bench in the blowout.

"Tonight was a good game for us, playing at the tempo we wanted to play at for close to 40 minutes," Tuchscherer said. "I think as the weekend went on we got stronger and that's a good sign for our squad moving forward."

Bartel was named the UFV Cascades/Abbotsford Heat Female Athlete of the Week in honour of her 22 points over the weekend.

"It was great to see Courtney playing aggressive offence again," Tuchscherer said. "She has incredible speed and a real silky shot, when those two weapons are being utilized she is very, very tough and when she is tough that makes us very hard to defend as a team."
