The Chilliwack Cougars split a Saturday doubleheader with the Cloverdale Spurs in Midget AAA baseball action at Fairfield Island Park.

Despite punching out seven hits, the Cougars fell 4-2 in the opener, with Cloverdale's flawless defence the difference.

Mike Rogers threw for four innings, struck out six and allowed four runs on just one hit. Reliever Matt Lamb threw two innings and allowed only one hit and no runs, while closer Evan Kellington shut the door in the seventh.

The second game was a completely different story, with the Cougars pounding Cloverdale 10-4. Half of those home-side runs were scored in the first inning as Chilliwack jumped out to an early lead.

Derek Riediger went three-for-four and was a home run away from hitting for the cycle. Josh Pharand and Rogers each added extra-base hits.

Pitcher Blake Peeling got the victory, allowing just three runs and four hits on five innings pitched. Pharand threw the final two innings and allowed only a single run.

The Cougars are 15-14, with seven regular season games remaining.

Chilliwack will host the Midget AAA and Peewee AA provincial championships Aug. 2 to 6 at Fairfield Island Park.
