The Northwest Giants remained in first place in the tight race for first place in the B.C. major midget hockey league.

The Giants took a pair of weekend games from the Greater Vancouver Canadians following the restart of league play last weekend.

The Burnaby Winter Club-based team defeated the Canadians 7-3 at home on Saturday before doubling Greater Vancouver 4-2 at the Richmond Oval on Sunday.

Colton Kerfoot sparked the Giants with a five-point outing in the opening game, tallying his ninth and 10th goals of the season in a 3-0 first period.

Kerfoot also set up Jackson Cressey, hot off scoring the Giants' game-winning goal at the Mac's international AAA midget hockey tournamment in Calgary, for back-to-back markers early in the middle frame, including the eventual game-winner.

Mac's tournament all-star forward Eric Margo also scored for the Giants.

On the Sunday, Burnaby defence-man Domenic Masellis scored his first goal of the season for the Giants to open the scoring. The 204-pound blueliner also registered his fifth assist this year on Jarid Luksevicius' 20th goal of the campaign.

New Westminster's Brandon Del Grosso and Malik Kaila, with the game-winner, both tallied on setups from Todd Cole.

The wins improved the Giants' record to 22-2-2, just two points better than the Okanagan Rockets - back-to-back winners over the North Island Silvertips.

Former Burnaby Winter Club product Matthew Barzal continues to be the runaway leader in league scoring with 69 points, including a major midget best 49 assists.

The Giants take on Fraser Valley this week, including a Sunday morning matchup at the winter club beginning at 9: 30 a.m.
