C1 Spartans win tourney

The Chilliwack peewee C1 Spartans claimed victory last weekend at a 20team Cloverdale hockey tournament. The young Spartans team (just five of 18 players are in their second year of peewee) won three of four games in the round robin before catching fire in the playoffs.

After knocking off Cloverdale in the quarterfinals, the Spartans found themselves up against Seafair C1, to whom they had lost in the round-robin. But Chilliwack managed to squeak past Seafair 3-2 thanks to a five-player shootout.

In the final, Chilliwack beat Ridge Meadows C2 7-2.

"It is always harder to win a large tournament and 20 teams is the largest I have ever seen," head coach Jeff Holliday said. "I was proud of how all the kids played, especially beating Seafair in the semifinal after having lost to them."
