The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women's basketball team won two of three games at a preseason tournament at the University of Regina over the weekend.

The Cascades dropped their first game Friday 75-68 to the hosts.

The Cougars had jumped out to quick 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter, and the Cascades never recovered despite settling down and playing three quarters of tough defence.

Chilliwack players led UFV's scoring with Sarah Wierks contributing 13 points and seven rebounds, Courtney Bartel adding 11 points and Nicole Wierks putting up 10.

On Saturday the Cascades defeated the University of Alberta Panda 65-55.

The damage could have been much worse after the Cascades put on a clinic in the third quarter, outscoring the Pandas by 13 points and opening up a 20-point lead, but the Pandas clawed back in the fourth to narrow the gap.

Mission's Aieisha Luyken led UFV with 16 points and four steals, while Nicole Wierks finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Cascades wrapped up the tournament with an exciting 5958 win over the Carleton University Ravens Sunday.

With less than 10 seconds left in the game, UFV was down by one point, when a steal by Bartel led to a foul and two successful free throws that clinched the game.

Kayli Sartori led the Cascades with 18 points, Nicole Wierks added 15 points and 11 rebounds and Sarah Wierks added 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

The two wins improved the Cascades preseason record to 5-1.
