Scottish singer Direct from Scotland, the Maeve MacKinnon Trio performs in Harrison Hot Springs March 15 in the Harrison Memorial Hall. Festival finale The Chilliwack Lions Club Music & Dance Festival wraps up this week with the music honour performance on March 15 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available for purchase at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre box office 604-391-7469 or www.chilliwackculturalcentre.ca.

Book sale The Friends of the Library book and disc sale is March 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Chilliwack Library. All books are $5 a bag (bag provided) and CDs and DVDs are individually priced.

Merchant of Venice The University of the Fraser Valley Theatre Department's production of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare is in the theatre on the old Chilliwack North campus at the corner of Yale and Airport. Production continues with 7: 30 p.m. performances March 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23. There are also matinees March 14 at noon and March 17 and 24 at 2 p.m.Ticket prices range from $10 to $22. Recycled art Fraser Valley artist Aaron Moran brings issues of land use, zoning and sustainability into his sculptural pieces made from found wood. Moran is an Emily Carr University of Art + Design graduate whose work is on display at the Chilliwack Museum until April 11. Exhibition hours at the museum run from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. The show closes on April 11.

March at Branch 280 Branch 280 of the Royal Canadian Legion has special events scheduled this month. Dance from 8 p.m. to midnight with Bob Marlow, March 15 and 16; Greg Hampson, March 22 and 23; and Ray Doucet, March 29 and 30. There is also karaoke March 10 from 1 to 5 p.m. New kitchen staff and menu, check it out.

Film series is back The Chilliwack Arts Council and the Toronto Film Festival Circuit co-present the 2013 Chilliwack Arts Council International Film Series: April 3, Midnight's Children (drama; Canada/UK, English/Hindustani); April 10, Stories We Tell (documentary, Canada, English); April 17, The Angels' Share (comedy/drama, UK/ France/Belgium/Italy, English); April 24, A Royal Affair (drama/history/romance, Denmark/Sweden/Czech Republic/Germany, Danish subtitled); May 1, Quartet (drama/romance, UK; English); May 8, The Sapphires (biography/comedy/drama/ musical, Australia, English). All films are at 7 p.m. at the Cottonwood 4 Cinemas. Ticket prices are $6 per screening. Musical auditions Secondary Characters is holding auditions for its fourth annual summer musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat April 5, 6 and 7 at St. Thomas Church Hall, 46048 Gore Ave. This renowned play will run from July 24 to Aug. 4. The show requires a large cast of all ages, genders, and voice types, with casting open for all roles. Leading roles include Joseph (male, tenor, 18-28) and the Narrator (female, soprano, 18-60). Joseph features 13 important roles for men. For the auditions, actors must prepare one memorized musical theatre number and be available for call-backs on April 14 from 5 to 9 p.m. Pre-registration is mandatory. Painting show The Agassiz Monday Painters' 52nd annual Art Show is April 13 at Agassiz United Church Hall, 6860 Lougheed Hwy. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All ages are welcome to come and enjoy the talents of the 25 participating artists, who work in a variety of media. Elvis - The Moments Relive the music of Elvis Presley with Elvis - The Moments featuring Pete Paquette, a two-time Collingwood Grand Champion, Toronto Elvis Festival Grand Champion, Top 10 in Memphis, and voted Las Vegas Elvis Festival Best Performer. Call for entries The Chilliwack Museum Chambers Gallery has issued a 2014 call for entries for solo, partnered or group exhibitions. Please submit five-inch-by-seven-inch photos a DVD, or memory stick (PowerPoint or Word document) in any medium, along with a biography and an artist statement. Twenty to 30 examples required. Pick up an application at the Chilliwack Museum or download the application form found on the Chilliwack Museum website at www. chilliwackmuseum.ca. Dead-line is May 31.

Music scholarships The Chilliwack Academy of Music is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for financial aid and will be awarding $30,000 in scholarships and bursaries to local students. Scholarships are for academy students registering for lessons next year, graduating high school students beginning a post-secondary music degree program and anyone registering for lessons at the academy next year who show financial need.
